Pom takes pie-eating title on Australia Day, Warwick Farm Racecourse’s Australia Day pie-eating contest 2012

AUSTRALIA was beaten at its own game at Warwick Farm racecourse’s Australia Day pie-eating contest.

The track attracted hordes of hungry competitors vying to devour the most meat pies in under five minutes.

In a slap to our national pride, Englishman Tom Pithouse demolished four pies in just over three minutes to win.

“I stole the Aussies’ thunder,” he said.

To add insult to injury, Mr Pithouse said he was still hungry.

“It hasn’t quite hit the spot, I think I could get a couple more down.”

The competition was judged by Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities star Roy Billing.

Mr Billing said he was partial to a pie, but “only one at a time”.

He said he enjoyed being back at Warwick Farm racecourse where scenes for Underbelly once were filmed.

“It’s a lovely course, it has a real country feel,” he said.

Mr Billing was among 3373 racegoers to celebrate Australia Day trackside at Warwick Farm.

Families enjoyed entertainment, an animal petting zoo, a giant inflatable bungee hopper as well as a visit by members of the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

On the track, Wazn took out the $100,000 Australia Day Cup.

There was extra cause for celebration when Glyn Schofield crossed the line wearing the Australia Day silks.

This gave racegoers a bonus $5 TAB betting voucher in an ATC promotion.
