Yardbird Ale House Death Sentence Wing Challenge 3, Fortitude Valley – 7pm Saturday 28 July 2012 Results

Results:

Round 3 was another fiercely fought round of the Wing Challenge, with 6 competitors fighting it out for a place in the Grand Final. With Nate Dizzle, Grant “Lord of the Wings” Daniel, and Colin “The Conqueror” MacLaurin back again to try for a place in the final, would they be able to beat the other 3 contestants and make it through?

The contestants were introduced, they were seated. Little did the know the pain that was about to ensue. With only seconds remaining before the competition start time, Cameron Jukes arrives!

The start was even, with Nate Dizzle seeming to struggle with the first few wings. He wasn’t prepared for the pain that was round 3, as these wings were seriously hot.

Colin “The Conqueror” seemed to pull away to an early lead, with the rest of the field close behind. It was difficult to figure out who was leading, each of the eaters seemingly destroying wings at an equal pace.

As time progressed, Nate Dizzle began to heave violently. Supported passionately by a blonde member of the crowd, he was still unfortunately unable to cope with the heat and volume of the wings, and soon retired to the garden to help ease the pain. He was disqualified for a second time this year for reversing.

After 12 minutes of a closely fought battle, the results were tallied and the winners decided

First Place: Colin “The Conqueror” MacLaurin – 29 wings, winning $100 bar tab and a bottle of Single Barrel Jack Daniel’s Whiskey

Second Place: Cameron “latearama” Jukes – 26 wings, winning a $50 bar tab

Third Place: A tie, with Anthony “Hot Sizzle” Suchich and “Slammin'” Sam Morrison, 25 wings, each winning a $25 bar tab.

Large crowds gathered for the 4 qualification rounds, with the winner of each round securing themselves a place in the main stage final.

And for the final, on the main stage in front of a crowd of thousands, Ben Rag, Colin MacLaurin, Charlie Dearden and Mitchell each sat down to a bowl of 25 honey puffs each. The challenge: To eat as many of the 2012 Paniyiri Honey Puffs as possible in 60 seconds.

In their winning heats, Ben ate 15, Charlie ate 10, Mitchell 14, and Colin 19. This being Ben’s 5th year competing, he wasn’t prepared to face up to a current Competitive Eating champion!

Mitchell was lucky to be included. After not showing up 10 minutes prior to the competition, his position was filled by a replacement Greg Yates. His appearance at 3:04pm saw his replacement retired and had him seated for the final.

After a gruelling 60 seconds of honey puff eating, Colin came out the clear winner with 18 honey puffs, followed closely by Ben with 14.

Colin took home the title and first prize, an overnight stay at Emporium. Congratulations Colin on your second event win!

Yardbird Ale House Death Sentence Wing Challenge 2 , Fortitude Valley – 21 April 2012 Results

Results:

Saturday 21 April saw 8 competitors battle it out to be crowned the Yardbird Ale House Death Sentence Wing Champion of round 2. The second event of the year showcased a number of seasoned eaters, including the winner of the Hot Dog Style Hot Dog Eating Competition, a previous entrant from round 1, and another competitor who had eaten the Off the Wall Diner’s “World’s Hottest burger twice!

Drawing a crowd even larger than the first event, it was standing room only as competitors attempted to down as many of the Death Sentence Wings as they could in 12 minutes. The previous record of 39 wings set by Jared Martin seemed to be under threat early, when wings were being eaten at almost one every 10 seconds. However once the heat started to settle in, the pace slowed, but remained strong throughout the 12 minutes.

At the half way mark, it was difficult to see who was leading the competition, with a number of eaters bowls almost full of discarded bones and lashings of hot sauce. Tristan “The Wing Wizard” Want, Rhys “The Squeeze” Endres, and Colin “The Conqueror” MacLaurin all wing-to-wing in a race to the finish. Only in the final minutes did there seem to be two clear leaders, with three others fighting it out for minor placing’s.

Andrew “The King of Heat” Ruller, while starting strong and handling the heat easily, dropped the pace at around the half-way point, unable to keep up with the volume of wings needing to be consumed.

Two last minute entrants Darryl “The Food Fiend” Fraser and Jerry “The Hurter” Houkamau, both large set gentlemen looked to be the part, but were unable to match the determination and speed of the other eaters.

With less than two minutes to go, Nate “Dizzle” lurched forward, cheeks full of wings looking very close to seeing the wings again, but pushed through the pain barrier and kept eating, holding what looked to be the leading position with Ben “Pullin” Pullen coming a very close second.

In the last 30 seconds, the unthinkable happens. In a moment of panic, Nate “Dizzle” crams too many wings in his mouth to further the lead over Ben, has a reversal, and is instantly disqualified him from the competition. The crowd couldn’t believe it, Nate couldn’t believe it, and a somewhat relieved Ben sitting opposite continued his pace until the final seconds counted down to zero.

Taking third place and winning a $25 bar tab with a count of 32 wings in 12 minutes, Tristan “The Wing Wizard” Want.

Second place, winning a $50 bar tab was second time entrant Rhys “The Squeeze” Endres, eating 36 wings in 12 minutes.

And taking out first place, matching the current record of 39 wings in 12 minutes and taking out a first prize of $100 bar tab was Ben “Pullin” Pullen

Pom takes pie-eating title on Australia Day, Warwick Farm Racecourse’s Australia Day pie-eating contest 2012

AUSTRALIA was beaten at its own game at Warwick Farm racecourse’s Australia Day pie-eating contest.

The track attracted hordes of hungry competitors vying to devour the most meat pies in under five minutes.

In a slap to our national pride, Englishman Tom Pithouse demolished four pies in just over three minutes to win.

“I stole the Aussies’ thunder,” he said.

To add insult to injury, Mr Pithouse said he was still hungry.

“It hasn’t quite hit the spot, I think I could get a couple more down.”

The competition was judged by Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities star Roy Billing.

Mr Billing said he was partial to a pie, but “only one at a time”.

He said he enjoyed being back at Warwick Farm racecourse where scenes for Underbelly once were filmed.

“It’s a lovely course, it has a real country feel,” he said.

Mr Billing was among 3373 racegoers to celebrate Australia Day trackside at Warwick Farm.

Families enjoyed entertainment, an animal petting zoo, a giant inflatable bungee hopper as well as a visit by members of the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

On the track, Wazn took out the $100,000 Australia Day Cup.

There was extra cause for celebration when Glyn Schofield crossed the line wearing the Australia Day silks.

This gave racegoers a bonus $5 TAB betting voucher in an ATC promotion.

Yardbird Ale House Death Sentence Wing Challenge, Fortitude Valley – 25 January 2012 Results

Results:

A great turn out for the Yardbird Ale House Death Sentence Wing challenge. We had the challenge outside at the front of the Yardbird, with crowds filling up not only the Yardbird, but spilling over next door into “Hot Dog Style” and the car park.

Greg the head chef started out strong, with many pinning him as the favorite (insider knowledge!). Adam looked like he was going to take out the competition based on his stack of eaten wings, but Jared kept his cool, winning the competition by only 2 wings.

There was some controversy as second placed “Middo” was given a 3 wing penalty due to a noticeable amount of meat and skin being left on the wings. Prior to his wings being counted, Billy, Middo and Yardbird owner Luke publicly debated how many wings should be deducted from his total, and all agreed 3 was fair. He was the last person counted in the competition, and with the deduction he came in 2 wings short of first place! Middo showed great sportsmanship and humbly accepted his second place finish.

Warren “El Scorcho” Lees, a last minute entry was only 1 wing from third place, a fantastic effort for his first try at competitive eating.

First place: Jared “Jihad” Martin – 39 wings, winning $100 bar tab and a bottle of Single Barrel Jack Daniel’s Whiskey

Second place: Adam “Middo” – 37 wings, winning a $50 bar tab

Third place: Shawn “Shawneebee” Brown – 32 wings, winning a $25 bar tab

Meat-Pie Eating Contest, Gladstone – 26 January 2012

The national day is an opportunity to gorge yourself until your heart’s content on a variety of Aussie treats. Competitions around the country stage lamington-eating contests and search for super-slurpers of Vegemite sandwiches. But by far the highlight is the event deciding the best muncher of meat pies.

The race will be on to find the fastest junior and senior pie eater at Gladstone Regional Council’s 2012 Australia Day Family Fun celebrations.

There will be 2 events, juniors aged 10 to 15 years and seniors 16 years and over.

Competitors will vie for a trophy as they confront the challenge to be the quickest to eat five pies in less than four minutes.

The January 26 activities will run from 4pm to 8pm at Millennium Esplanade, Tannum Sands, starting with the give away of 1000 sausages, cooked by Boyne Island Lions Club and assisted by Councillors.

Rides, free face painting and music will keep the crowds amused with stage and roving performances by comedy duo, The Crack Up Sisters.

And how good is this picture? Good old Artie, this just gives him even more of a legendary status!
